It all depends on how you define “Christian nation.” America may have been founded on Judeo-Christian principles (though that debate is a very deep one), but it’s hard to find anything else today that would lead anyone to conclude that America is a Christian nation—at least as I would define it.
In 2008, Barna found that 70% of Americans “say that God is the all-powerful, all-knowing creator of the universe who still rules it today.” That sounds like a Christian nation. However, only 9% “have a biblical worldview.” If we are Christian, it is in name only — not in the way we govern or in the way the citizens believe or behave. Not by a long shot.
I think if a prominent evangelical preacher had said exactly what Obama said, people would have seen it as the beginning of a very powerful sermon about how far we’ve fallen.

What makes a nation a Christian one? Is it the people and their beliefs? Or is it the foundation of its law and government?

We can spin this either way. Knowing that the majority of Americans do not have a Christian worldview and cannot be labeled as “Born Again,” we can conclude that the U.S. is not a Christian nation in that regard. However, the foundation of America’s law and government is undeniably “Christian” and the heritage of this country is clearly a Christian one. When I write or speak about the U.S. being a Christian nation I am referring to its heritage. More specifically, I am referring to its foundation for law and government.

I love the fact that Senator Forbes stood up and asked those two questions, and he is right. This country was founded on Christian Principals, they added God to their legislation (which in my opinion will never be enough, but that is a different conversation). But to be honest, President Obama was correct in saying that this is no longer a Christian nation. As a whole, we are not Christian. Many people have strayed, but many “Muslim countries” are filled with people who do not have Muslim beliefs. Some diplomats of those countries are not Muslim. But, they continue to identify with the principals that they were founded on.
America is having an identity crisis. Not only our government, but those living in it as well (again, another conversation). Our leadership is very concerned in approval ratings and not offending their base, and if the majority of that base may not all be Christian, then we may not be Christian. However, if our President thinks its okay to take out this basic principal from our country, what other basic principals would he be okay with removing?

I personally believe that President Obama is a conformist. He proclaims to Turkey that the United States is not a Christian nation because the Turks are mostly Islamic.
He then goes and tells Egypt that we are a Muslim nation, when according to wall builders the US is made up of less than 1% of Muslims. Also, Egypt is made up of polytheist’s and other religions (that are not Islam).
Americans don’t really seem to have a problem with being told what they are and are not. Our government does not have the right to be controlling what our beliefs are.

I believe it is sad that our President is standing before third world countries proclaiming that our “great” nation (which was founded on christian beliefs)is not a Judeo-Christian Nation. It is an embarrassment to all Christain’s in the U.S.A. that our own President would sell us out to the very countries who want to bring harm to us.

He said “we are no longer a Christian nation”, then continued to include other religions. But, I think he meant what he said first. And he was glad about it and proud to say it.
I think it’s true in some ways and not so much in other ways.
The people are not necessarily Christian as a majority and do not necessarily practice it, BUT we have definitely had the Judeo-Christian foundation since the beginning of this nation.

i do not think President Obama has the right to say what kind oh nation it is. i think it is up to the peoples beliefs. if there are more Christian than it should me a Christian nation. if there are more none christian than its a none christian nation and so on. but America was founded on Christian beliefs so i think the U.S.A is a Christian nation in some way.
